5. Defending food products and protecting health

Historical developments enable us to identify the successive problems encountered and the solutions proposed. We will focus on the succession of major products: major in terms of their use, longevity or success; major in terms of the novelty of the concepts they have conveyed or the unintended effects they have revealed.

The terms "pest control" and "chemical protection" have been used in the past, and are now being replaced by "garden maintenance" and "phytopharmaceutical care". The brand names of pesticide preparations and their advertising images also reflect the same evolution: from names evocative of war, weapons, martial arts and competition, to others devoid of violent connotations.
