
6. Examples of application to synthesis
Can this reaction be applied to synthesis?
Consider the reaction of pinenyl bromide with bis(cyclooctadiene)nickel, a compound with 18 electrons whose cyclooctadiene ligand can easily be released. Its departure gives a 14-electron molecule that is obviously highly reactive. Oxidative addition takes place and the result is a dimeric compound in which the pinenyl group binds as an allyl group, by three electrons (figure 6 ).
