1.1 Combustion
Everyone has experienced combustion, whether controlled or accidental, but defining what combustion is isn't that simple. However, the following definition can be proposed.
Combustion is a spontaneous, self-sustaining, vigorous (i.e. rapid) and highly exothermic redox reaction, which can be accompanied by light emission.
Combustion is therefore a chemical reaction involving two reactants, a fuel that plays the role of reducer and an oxidizer that plays the role of oxidant (the latter term is often used instead of the former).
