15.1 Geometry of nature
When talking about fractals, reference is often made to the Geometry of Nature . A fractal object, in the purely mathematical sense, requires an infinite number of orders of magnitude of scale according to a power law, i.e. infinite spatial self-similarity.
In nature, fractal-like spatial structures occur in phenomena as diverse as clouds, river systems, geological faults, mountains, coastlines, animal skins, snowflakes, crystals, blood vessels and ocean waves.
