4. Outlook and developments
For almost a century, Raman scattering spectroscopy has relied on technical and methodological developments to offer ever more effective analysis and characterization solutions. In its early years, the method was reserved for the exclusive use of a handful of solid-state physicists. Today, it is used in production lines and quality control laboratories throughout the world.
Fiber-optic remote probes enable Raman spectroscopy to be adapted to measurements under hostile conditions, such as high temperature, high pressure or irradiation. Today's portable solutions can achieve a signal-to-noise ratio in extreme conditions comparable to that obtained in the laboratory. Raman spectroscopy methods adapted to high temperatures can now be used to characterize materials at temperatures in excess of 2,000°C.
