Today, analytical techniques have developed considerably, sometimes involving highly complex systems that require a highly skilled workforce. The business of water analysis laboratories has evolved considerably, leading to the creation of large, highly specialized and automated laboratories. This has also led to the total separation of sampling and analysis activities, and to the extensive transport of samples over long distances. The problem of sample preservation is a major one for laboratories.
