4.1 Sodium sulfite

4.1.1 Properties

Sodium sulfite is a salt with the empirical formula Na 2 SO 3 . In anhydrous form, it is stable in dry air, whereas when exposed to moist air, it is rapidly oxidized to sodium sulfate. At around 600°C, it decomposes into sodium sulfate and sodium sulfide. In the presence of sulfur, it reacts to form sodium thiosulfate. Properties are listed in Table 19
