2. Membrane load characterization

Since a porous membrane is never neutral, but rather a carrier of charges, electrostatic interactions also play a part in the transfer. As a result, more and more researchers and industrialists today feel the need to characterize properties other than pore size distribution, such as zeta potential, which is the subject of this paragraph.

2.1 Definitions

The presence of charged groups on the membrane surface partly determines the level of clogging achieved during filtration. On the other hand, if we wish to analyze the transfer of a solute through a porous membrane, the material charges that need to be considered are those present along the walls of the pores in which the molecules move.
