5. Membrane separation

5.1 General information

Conventional filtration cannot remove particles or micro-organisms smaller than 1 micrometer. For finer particles, membrane separation techniques are used (figure 26 ). The pore size of each membrane defines its separation capacity, also known as the cut-off point.
