2. Assessment of renewal needs

2.1 Age-based approaches

As shown by the laying periods of pipelines in service in France (figure 5 ), the service life of a pipeline can be long (sometimes in excess of 100 years). Based on the assumption that network ageing is the main cause of network failure, approaches have been developed that use pipe age criteria to assess renewal needs and define pipe replacement programs.
