Aphotic; aphotic
Refers to aquatic zones where light does not penetrate (too deep, too much suspended matter...). Conversely, lighted areas are said to be "photic".
Battance ; soil crusting
Characteristic of soil that tends to form a crust on the surface under the action of rain or heavy trampling. It is an indicator of degradation.
Biote; biota
Term designating all living organisms in an environment or ecosystem.
Effet cocktail; cocktail effect
Ecotoxic effect linked to a mixture of substances, at low or very low individual doses. In general, the effects are multiple, given the diversity of modes of action of the molecules in the mixture, which are often sublethal and may be multi-generational.
