3. NaTech earthquake risk management
On August 17, 1999, the Izmit region in Turkey was hit by a magnitude 7.4 earthquake . A number of accident sequences triggered by seismic tremors in a refinery illustrate the NaTech earthquake issue in concrete terms:
a 115 m high reinforced concrete chimney ruptured at a quarter of its height, causing pipes carrying flammable substances to burst, resulting in a fire;
naphtha tanks 30 to 40 m in diameter catch fire from sparks caused by friction between the floating roof and the jacket.
