4. Treatment processes

Nitrous oxide emissions can be controlled and reduced at two levels: at source or after treatment of the gases produced.

4.1 Source reduction

  • The most elegant approach to minimizing nitrous oxide emissions is to drastically reduce their production at source.

    In the case of diffuse emissions generated by agricultural soils, N 2 O production is the direct consequence of nitrogen transformations by soil bacteria (ie, nitrification and denitrification).
