3. The World and Space
3.1 New legal concept of Space
Since 1962, the United Nations has had a secretariat, UNOOSA (United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs), responsible for promoting international cooperation in the peaceful use and exploration of outer space, and in the use of space science and technology, within the framework of sustainable economic and social development.
A "Space Treaty", or international treaty on the principles governing the activities of States in the exploration and use of outer space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies, was signed in 1967. Under the terms of this Treaty, a State bears "international responsibility" for its national activities in outer space, including other celestial bodies.
