3. Characterization of room acoustics

3.1 Perceptual space

Speech perception is essentially a one-dimensional problem: intelligibility.

Music perception, on the other hand, is a multidimensional problem. Recent studies have highlighted 4 to 6 dimensions of perceptual space for musical sounds, and have sought to assign a perceptual factor to each of these dimensions. This is a very delicate task, as the perceptual factors are not independent of each other.

The proposed factors are as follows:

  • loudness ;

  • the envelopment effect;

  • precision (clarity ) ;

  • intimacy ;

  • reverberance ;
