2.1 Basic concepts
Readers will notice that the 3rd edition, in its title, emphasizes the notion and importance of concepts. The title of the second edition was "International Vocabulary of Fundamental and General Terms in Metrology", while the 3rd edition is "International Vocabulary of Metrology – Fundamental and General Concepts and Associated Terms". Terminology is only used to express concepts.
Metrology is concerned with the measurement of generally quantifiable quantities (figure 1 ).
