4. Conclusion
Fiber optic sensors have been the subject of sustained research and development for many years. For physical and mechanical measurements, they are now a mature technology already deployed in the field. (Bio-)chemical measurements are a fast-growing area of research, for which the first developments date back barely two decades. Their many advantages make them the technology of choice for localized, remote and minimally invasive measurements.
In the future, ongoing research and development of this sensor technology will further enhance its sensitivity and versatility. As a result, their market share should continue to grow in the years to come.
