2. Different types of fiber optic sensors

2.1 Sensor architecture

The propagation of light waves in optical fibers is modified by various disturbances. By analyzing these disturbances, we can trace them back to their source.

The following modifications of the light wave can be distinguished:

  • light signal attenuation ;

  • scattering due to imperfections in the light guide ;

  • widening of light pulses;

  • polarization modal dispersion.
