2.1 Applications of white-light interferometry, optical coherence tomography (OCT)

It should be noted that the terms "white light interferometry", "optical coherence tomography (OCT)", "coherence multiplexing", or OLCR (Optical Low Coherence reflectometry), which are used by various authors, correspond in fact to the same technique ( [R 460] , § 2.8). Using a spectrally broad (low-coherence) source illuminating a two-wave interferometer (Michelson, Mach-Zehnder), interference bangs are created only when the lengths of the two optical paths (the "measurement" and "reference" arms) are matched, to within the coherence length (e.g. a few tens of micrometers).
