3. Anemometer calibration methods

Like all measuring instruments, anemometers need to be calibrated before use.

Calibration methods are based on two main principles:

  • calibration using a primary means of materializing the speed quantity;

  • calibration by comparison with a reference instrument connected to national standards.

The principle behind the various calibration methods is explained below.

3.1 Primary method calibration

The principle is to create a device that enables speed to be measured directly from measurements of primary physical quantities. Only four methods are recognized.
