
7. Telecommunications
The high frequency of terahertz waves makes it possible to envisage the development of very high-speed telecommunication systems, particularly in the context of the development of 5G and future 6G technologies. However, the absence of high-performance waveguides and the high absorption of ambient air limit this field of application to very short-distance transmissions. At present, work and demonstrations are being carried out to use a terahertz electromagnetic wave in a room inside a building to carry information at a rate of several tens of gigabits per second (Gbit/s). The idea, for example, is to use the signal brought into the room by an optical fiber to modulate a terahertz source that radiates throughout the room via an antenna.
