Advantages and constraints of NFS
As we have seen, although NFS can in principle measure the same quantities as SM, it is a very large equipment technique (VGE), which is justified in applications that benefit from the exceptional properties of synchrotron radiation, such as high flux, small size, low angular divergence and high degree of polarization of the X-ray beam. Experimental times are generally an order of magnitude shorter than for conventional MS. What's more, due to the high monochromaticity of the radiation and the use of a scattering technique, measurements are free of continuous background, unlike with transmission MS, for which the off-absorption level is a large number. It's also important to note that a radioactive source is not required and, as a result, all Mössbauer transitions are in principle accessible.
