9. Software
Most design-of-experiments software is included in statistics software. This introduction has been gradual, driven by demand. Early design-of-experiments software was very poorly adapted to the needs of experimentalists. Recently, a considerable effort has been made by computer scientists and statisticians to ensure that these programs are better adapted to the needs of experimenters. These programs are still strongly influenced by their statistical origins, and may put off some users. However, there has been steady progress towards improvement, i.e. towards taking better account of experimenters' requirements. Nevertheless, all these software packages require a good knowledge of the experimental design method, and cannot be used without solid training in experimental design.
