2. In vitro experimental procedures specific to biomaterials
The experimental methods recommended for assessing the biocompatibility of biomaterials are rather limited. They are based on four successive, selective stages, which gradually reduce the number of materials to be tested . The selection sequence consists of :
1) in vitro corrosion tests in an organic medium (as well as wear and friction tests);
2) in vitro corrosion tests (wear and friction tests can also be carried out at this stage) in a mixed inorganic-organic medium;
3) examinations after contact with cell cultures;
4) in vivo tests based on animal implantation....
