5.1 Machining and flow rates
Heat-treated wood poses no particular machining problems, but tools and working conditions need to be adapted. Due to the hardness of modified wood, it is preferable to use tungsten carbide cutting tools with smaller cutting angles (around 10°) than for natural wood (CTBA) . The standard cutting speed of natural wood (35 to 60 m/s) is suitable for treated wood. On the other hand, as the material is fissile, it is preferable to reduce the feed speed in order to produce chips of reduced thickness.
