Polyurethanes were discovered in the 1930s by Otto Bayer, who carried out a polyaddition of various diisocyanates with glycols or diamines. PUs were used to replace natural rubbers during the Second World War . Worldwide production is estimated at 25.62 million tonnes in 2023 .
