4. Glossary

Dual hardness shielding (BDD)

A ballistic protection system consisting of a ceramic layer on the front and a composite backing layer on the rear. The main function of the ceramic layer is to slow the progression of the impacting projectile by dissipating energy through fragmentation, while that of the backing layer is to retain the ceramic and projectile fragments while limiting rear deformation.

Weight per unit area

A measure of mass per unit area, usually expressed in kilograms per square meter (kg.m –2 ) or pounds per square foot (psf). Since armor plates come in a variety of sizes, and ceramic densities vary, the notion of "mass per unit area" is a common way of comparing different system configurations.
