Quite obviously, research into phononic crystals and metamaterials explores the potential of these artificial materials as a disruptive technology compared with conventional acoustic wave materials and devices. Acoustic and elastic waves are an integral part of our everyday lives. They are at the heart of a large number of consumer applications, far beyond the obvious problem of audible acoustics.
