5. Glossary – Definitions
Ferromagnetism; Ferromagnétisme
Property of certain bodies of magnetizing very strongly under the effect of an external magnetic field. This property results from the collective coupling of the spins, the moments of all the spins being parallel and oriented in the same way. In a ferrimagnetic material, the magnetic moments are anti-parallel but of different amplitudes. The result is spontaneous magnetization of the material.
Hyperthermie magnétique; Magnetic hyperthermia
Experimental cancer treatment technique based on the fact that magnetic nanoparticles heat up locally when subjected to an alternating magnetic field of particular frequency and amplitude. This type of technique has only been tested on humans in Germany, but many basic research laboratories are working on improving it.
