6. Effect of a DC magnetic field

Magnetic fields of varying intensity are used to dampen the movement of liquid metals.

Example

in continuous casting of steel slabs, such fields of up to 1 tesla are used to control flows in the ingot mould .

The damping time t a is inversely proportional to the square of the applied magnetic field strength and varies as :
