5. Process evolution
Using the classification shown in table 9 , we will examine the latest developments in what can be called the classic direct reduction processes, before looking at the current status of new process developments.
5.1 Classic processes
Figure 11 clearly shows that a considerable 90% of the world's reduced ore production in 2003 was generated by natural gas-based processes, and of these gas-based processes, only two were used:
MIDREX: nearly 65% of total production in 2003;
HYL III: nearly 19% of total production...
