5. Obtaining CMMp from a semi-liquid matrix

This set of processes is mainly used on a laboratory scale. Although good temperature control is required, there are a few industries that produce CMMp from the semi-liquid or paste state. The principle of shaping between liquidus and solidus was first studied at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) by Professor Flemings, in the early 60s.

The principle of paste stirring is shown in figure 24 . The furnace maintains the alloy in a semi-liquid phase, which presupposes good temperature control. As the particles are incorporated, a mechanical agitator stirs the mixture vigorously. This stirring has multiple effects: it prevents the formation of dendrites, homogenizes the temperature and modifies the composition...
