2. Electro-refining
The use of copper as an electrical conductor and its suitability for wire drawing require high-purity copper in excess of 99.95% Cu. Blister copper, after being cast and fire-refined, forms the soluble anode that yields Cu 2+ ions in sulfuric solution. These are deposited in a metallic state under the action of a direct electric current on a copper cathode.
2.1 Theoretical basis
According to Faraday's law, the quantity deposited Q (in g) is a function of current intensity I (in A) and time t (in h). The operation is performed with a certain efficiency η, and the relationship is written :
