3. Raw materials

The converter charge consists of metallic materials (cast iron, scrap, pre-reduced iron pellets or briquettes, briquetted dusts), slag-forming additions (lime, dolomite, spar) and bath-temperature-regulating additions (ore, cooling scrap, thermogens).

3.1 Cast iron

The composition of cast irons processed in oxygen steel mills varies considerably from one plant to another (table 2 ), depending on the analysis of the ores, coal and coke used, and on the doctrine applied by the plant to optimize the cost price of the steels it has to produce.
