2.1 Solidification and cylinder characteristics

The rolls were initially designed on the basis of experience gained in the design of conventional continuous casting ingot moulds. For this reason, they are cooled by circulating water at high speed through channels or water blades; only laboratory installations, with short casting times of the order of a few roll rotations, are not cooled.

The heat flux density in ingot molds is of the order of 10 MW/m 2 , which is 1 or 2 orders of magnitude greater than in conventional continuous casting. This is easily understood by observing the results in figure 4 , where...
