We will therefore describe in detail the various heat treatments of steels, maintaining the distinction between those which lead to hardening in the mass of the steel and those which lead to softening, to end with some special treatments which also affect the volume of steel parts. However, the reader should not neglect to take into account all the possibilities offered by surface heat treatments (see, in this treatise, the article "Surface heat treatments of steels"). ) and thermochemical treatments (see, in this treatise, the articles "Thermochemical treatments in practice" and "Thermochemical treatments in practice"). ) to give the surface layer of steel parts specific properties that are highly adapted to particular operating conditions.
