3. Special heat treatments

3.1 Softening anneals

These treatments are applied to parts for which a high level of hardness is required, in order to obtain a softened structure to facilitate roughing by machining prior to quality treatment (hardening + tempering).

Four types of treatment can be applied, in increasing order of effectiveness (figure ):

  • simple annealing by prolonged holding at a temperature just below Ac 1 , for example at 650 ˚C on GX100CrMo6-1 (Z100CD6.1-M) steel (240 HB) or 700 to 760 ˚C on GX200Cr12 (Z200C12-M) steel...
