8. Fields of application

Titanium and titanium alloy castings are used in the following main sectors (1993 European titanium foundry sales: 140 MF).

8.1 Medical sector

  • Internal prostheses (hip, knee, spine, dental, etc.): to this day, titanium's excellent biocompatibility with human tissue is widely recognized. What's more, its non-magnetizing properties mean that it does not interfere with nuclear magnetic resonance imaging.

  • External prostheses: the low density of titanium, combined with its excellent mechanical properties, means that the volume and mass of systems used to make artificial limbs and external fracture reduction systems can be reduced.
