4.1 Static characteristics

  • Compressive strength

    The compressive strength of ductile metals is of little interest to designers, and is generally not measured.

    The yield strength of these metals is slightly higher in compression than in tension, because the onset of plastic deformation is delayed under compressive loading.

  • Shear and torsion resistance

    Shear and torsion breaking strengths are approximately 90% of the tensile breaking strength. The 0.2% yield strength in torsion ranges from 68% to 80% of the yield strength in tension. The highest...
