5. Some applications for shape memory alloys

Shape memory alloys are used in a wide variety of fields, from mechanical engineering and medicine to household products and even fashion. The aim here is not to describe a large number of applications, but rather to give a few principles, each illustrated by one or two examples.

5.1 Coupling

The aim is to ensure a connection between two parts by taking advantage of the ability of A.M.F. to deform strongly in the martensitic state. A cylindrical sleeve made of T i-Ni alloy, whose transformation temperature is well below room temperature, is designed so that its internal diameter in the mother phase is slightly smaller than the external dimension of the tubes to be joined.
