3. Steel designation rules

The European standard NF EN 10027 relating to the steel designation system has come into force, replacing the corresponding national standards.

In France, for example, standard NF A 02-005 is now obsolete and has been replaced since November 20, 1992 by standard NF EN 10027.

This standard consists of two parts:

  • NF EN 10027-1 : symbolic designation ;

  • NF EN 10027-2: numerical designation.

It is supplemented by a CEN report CR 10260 (information circular ECISS/IC 10, AFNOR classification index: A 02-005-3) which deals with additional symbols for the symbolic designation of steels.
