4. Transformations with phase change

4.1 General considerations

Various heat treatments can modify the structure of metals and alloys. Order-disorder transformation, observed when heating ordered intermediate phases 4.2.1 , is one example; the recrystallization of work-hardened metals, studied in detail in the article Work-hardening of aluminum alloys, is another. , is another; in the latter case, there is a change in microstructure (grain boundaries, etc.) but virtually no change in crystal structure.
