Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs)

Also known as porous coordination polymers, porous hybrid solids composed of organic and inorganic parts linked together by coordination bonds. Due to the nature of these bonds, the construction of these materials gives rise to crystalline networks.

coordination link; coordination bond

An ionocovalent chemical bond in which both electrons in the bond originate from the same atom. Coordination bonds present in MOFs include a metal ion or Lewis acid (electron acceptor), and an atom or ion of an organic molecule or Lewis base (electron donor).

ligand; ligand

In the case of MOFs, a molecule with atoms or ions with chemical functions that can donate electrons to metal ions to form one or more coordination bonds.
