4. Atomic structure of structural units

First predicted by geometrical considerations, the arrangement of atoms into structural units in the joint was deduced from numerical simulations. , and confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) observations.

The simulations specified the joint's width, about two interplanar distances, its minimum energy, and the most stable atomic configuration associated with it.
