2. Methods for studying dry corrosion

2.1 Sample preparation

Laboratory studies require samples that are representative of the reality of industrial parts, of reasonable size and reproducible from one sample to another. Metrology prior to oxidation must be meticulous. Surface preparation is a key step, as it modifies the reactivity of the metal in the samples, and can thus condition the results of high-temperature oxidation.

Standards NF ISO 21608 and ISO 13573 describe sample preparation procedures for oxidation tests under isothermal conditions [NF ISO 21608] or with exposure to thermal cycles [ISO 13573].
