2. UV selection rules

The theoretical problem of UV band intensity leads to the calculation of the probability of a transition. We have seen that this probability is directly accessible to experimental measurements by determining the integrated area of the absorption curve εdν . If the curve is Gaussian, which is common in UV, this area can be evaluated by the expression :

f = 4.6 × 10 – 9 ε max ν 1/2 in cgs units
