5. Binders

Whatever pelletizing technique is chosen, the appropriate choice of pelletizing binder is a strategic and delicate step on which the success of the operation depends. This choice is still largely made empirically, based on existing know-how. However, knowledge of the classification and selection criteria for different binders, as well as binder selection methods, is useful.

5.1 Classification

The main criteria that can be used to classify binders are :

  • the physical or chemical origin of the bonds. While some binders only form physical bonds with the surface of the solid, others have the ability to react chemically with the solid, considerably increasing the strength of the granules through the formation of solid...
