3. Electrodialysis implementation
There are two main modes of implementation.
Conventional electrodialysis, or EDC, is the oldest and still the most widely used. It is based on the use of ion exchange membranes (homopolar). Different configurations can be used to build up the elemental pattern to enable various processing operations.

Electrodialysis with bipolar membranes (EDMB) is a much more recent development. It is based on the use, in stacks of various configurations, of bipolar membranes and ion exchange membranes (homopolar).
Only configurations commonly used for industrial applications are presented in this section.
