In this article, we take a practical approach to the dependability of networked applications. After a presentation of the concepts of dependability of computer systems and one of the most widespread means of implementing it, namely fault tolerance, we gave an overview of the techniques that can be employed, focusing on the particularities of distributed systems, demonstrating the complexity of developing fault-tolerant networked applications.

After a brief presentation of the proprietary solutions provided today by computer manufacturers, we then pointed out that standardization efforts have been made by the OMG for fault tolerance in distributed object-based applications. The specifications and concepts proposed in the FT CORBA standard are public
