2. Microprocessor classification

2.1 General structure

A microprocessor integrates the processing unit function and possibly other functions on a single chip. As an introduction to this paragraph, we will briefly present and comment on the internal structure of a generic microprocessor (figure 3 ).

This microprocessor consists of a number of function blocks:

  • the ALU (Arithmetic and Logic Unit), which also includes the working registers;

  • the vector unit for processing integer arrays ;
